Adaptation to Climate Change

In his research Manuel Linsenmeier tackles policy-relevant questions around adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. In some of his most recent work he studies the global evidence for adaptation to climate change as well as the potential of weather forecasts to improve adaptation decisions. He has also worked extensively on mitigation policies. For example, in one of his recent publications Mr. Linsenmeier and coauthors quantify the climate benefits of leadership in climate policy making, showing that for many countries the indirect reductions of GHG emissions arising from international leadership may be of a similar magnitude as the direct reductions of domestic emissions.

Mr. Linsenmeier's broader research agenda centers on questions related to climate change and sustainable development. This includes extensive work to empirically quantify the costs of temperature fluctuations at different time scales and to better understand the heterogeneity of expected climate impacts. At CESifo, he will discuss some of his work in progress and explore new research ideas on related topics. A particular focus of his visit will be on identifying empirical settings in which adaptation to climate change can be studied with observational and experimental methods.

Manuel Linsenmeier works as Postdoctoral Researcher at the Climate School at Columbia University in New York City. Prior to his current position, Manuel received a PhD in Environmental Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he was affiliated with the Department of Geography and Environment and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. In 2023 his thesis received the Best Doctoral Dissertations Award from the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. His research has been published in leading interdisciplinary journals and environmental economics field journals.
