ifo/CESifo Visiting Researcher
Stefan Staubli, University of Calgary, CESifo Guest from 20 to 24 May 2024.
Disability Insurance Take-up
Stefan Staubli, in a project with Andreas Haller, is investigating the effect of disability insurance benefits and wage shocks on disability insurance take-up. The researchers are using Canadian administrative data to analyze local labor market shocks and a 1987 reform that increased disability insurance benefits. They then use the empirical estimates as inputs in a theoretical model to measure the value of disability insurance benefits. In another project with various co-authors from the Norwegian School of Economics and the University of Zurich, they will use Swiss and Austrian microdata to investigate how individuals’ labor supply and savings respond in anticipation of future increases in the retirement age and reductions in public pensions.
Mr. Staubli’s research interests are in the areas of public, labor, and health economics. During his visit at CESifo, will work on several projects on disability insurance and public pensions. In particular, his current research focuses on the work disincentive effects of disability insurance programs, the impact of retirement programs on labor supply and health, and the impact of childcare subsidies on the labor supply of parents and grandparents.
Stefan Staubli is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary. Before joining the University of Calgary, he was an Associate Economist at the RAND Corporation. He is also a Research Affiliate at CEPR and a Research Fellow at NBER and IZA. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of St. Gallen and an MA in Economics and Statistics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
