How Transit Systems Affect Exports

Recently, Alejandro Graziano and co-authors J. Carballo, G. Schaur and C. Volpe Martincus published a paper in ReStat where they studied the impact of a transit system on exports. Specifically, they analyzed the upgrading of a system that streamlined border processing in Central America. They found that it increased exports by expanding the number of firms engaging in exports and the frequency of shipments in exporters.

Mr. Graziano’s main research interests are international trade, trade policy, and competition.

He has worked on various topics, such as the impact of trade facilitation policies on exports, the role of trade policy uncertainty for trade integration, and the relationship between the structure of markets and the gains from trade.

Currently, he is working mainly on the following four projects using both empirical and theoretical methodologies, depending on the research question at hand: 1) the impact of the digitalization of border procedures on exporters' performance in Costa Rica; 2) the inter-relationship between international trade, industrial concentration and the welfare gains from trade; 3) the impact of disruptive shocks along the supply chain in the pandemic on international trade flows; and 4) the implications of Brexit uncertainty before the 2016 referendum for import prices in the UK. During his stay at CESifo, Mr. Graziano plans to continue working on these projects and making connections to develop future collaboration.

Alejandro Graziano is an Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at the University of Nottingham. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, his Master’s in Economics from Universidad de San Andres (Argentina), and his Economics Bachelor's degree from Universidad de Buenos Aires. He previously worked at the Inter-American Development Bank as a Research Fellow.
