Joschka Wanner

Gravity Models

Much of Joschka Wanner’s work is related to the gravity model in international trade. He has worked on extended structural gravity models, for example, that allow an analysis of the effects of carbon tariffs or of unilateral withdrawals from the Paris Agreement and on techniques to estimate non-linear gravity specifications with multiple high-dimensional sets of fixed effects. He has published his work inter alia in the Journal of International Economics, Ecological Economics and the European Economic Review.

Mr. Wanner is a quantitative economist working on international and environmental economics, as well as on econometrics. During his stay at CESifo, he will work on two research projects. First, in a joint project with ifo researcher Feodora Teti on “The Trade Effects of EU Sanctions Against Russia,” he estimates the extent to which European sanctions have been successful in lowering Russian trade in the targeted product groups. Second, in a joint project with Yuta Watabe from Xiamen University on “Multinational Production, Trade, and Carbon Emissions”, he develops a quantitative general equilibrium framework that can be used to assess the effects of globalization on carbon emissions, both via international trade and via foreign direct investment by multinational firms.

Since November 2020, Joschka Wanner has been an Assistant Professor of Quantitative Economics at the University of Potsdam. He is also faculty member at the Berlin School of Economics, as well as external researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He obtained his PhD in economics from the University of Bayreuth in November 2019 for a thesis entitled: “Gravity in International Trade: Econometric Challenges and Environmental Extensions.”
