Nicola Cortinovis, Utrecht University, CESifo Guest from 6 to 10 February 2023.

Multinational Spillovers

In a current working paper, Nicola Cortinovis, joint with Z. Wang and H. Kurniawan, studies how spillovers generated by multinationals (MNEs) diffuse across space and through different channels and affect the productivity of domestic firms in Indonesia. In the paper, the researchers suggest that MNE spillovers diffuse not only within industries and along value chains, but also through industrial relatedness, broadly capturing similarities in skills and technologies across industries.

Mr. Cortinovis’s research agenda focuses on the impact of network linkages and spillover effects on the productivity and innovative performance of firms and regions. In the context of a recent grant application, he has started working on Industry 4.0, with a special interest in 3-D printing, in order to understand if and how 3D printing technologies may impact the economic performance and diversification opportunities of firms and regions.

During his visit to CESifo (6–11 February 2023), he will present his research on MNE spillovers at a Lunchtime Seminar as well as discuss and share knowledge on digitalization, new technologies and Industry 4.0.

Nicola Cortinovis is currently Assistant Professor of Economic Geography at the Faculty of Geosciences of Utrecht University. He previously taught at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam. He holds a PhD in Economic Geography from Utrecht University. He was also awarded a Master’s in European Economic Studies from the College of Europe – Brugge and a Master’s in International Studies (Development Economics) from the University of Trento.
