Parental Health Shocks

Jörg Paetzold is finalizing a project studying the impact of parental health on adult children’s labor market outcomes using rich administrative data from Austria. In our aging societies, care dependency of the elderly population is increasing, which may impact not only the affected individual but also other family members, including adult children. In this project Mr. Paetzold and his co-authors analyze the impact of a parental health shock on children’s labor market outcomes by gender, child-parent distance, and the kind of health shock. Furthermore, they exploit a liberalization of the formal care market to examine whether a sharp increase in the supply of migrant care workers helped adult children to avoid the negative impact of a parental health shock.

Mr. Paetzold’s research interests are in Public Finance, Applied Microeconomics, (European) Labor Markets and Health Economics. In his empirical research, he focuses on the clean identification of causal effects. During his time at CESifo, he plans to work on the effect of public transport subsidies (e.g. last summer’s 9 Euro Ticket in Germany) on traffic volume and air pollution.

Jörg Paetzold is an Associate Professor (tenured), in the Department of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg. Previous to this position, he was a visiting Post-Doc at UC Berkeley (Host Emmanuel Saez) in 2015/2016 as well as a researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies Vienna (IHS) and at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO). He is also affiliated with the Norwegian Centre of Taxation NoCeT at NHH Bergen. He holds a doctorate and a Habilitation in Economics from the University of Salzburg and masters degrees from the University of Innsbruck.
