Pricing Carbon

In the study Pricing Carbon (with M. A. Drupp and R. C. Schmidt), Frikk Nesje has examined the variation of global and unilateral carbon pricing recommendations and their determinants. To this end, the researchers provide survey evidence on carbon pricing from more than 400 publication-based experts across almost 40 countries. They quantify the extent of disagreement but also reveal that a majority of experts can agree on short- and medium-term global carbon prices, and on unilateral carbon prices in almost all countries. Their results provide no evidence for free-riding and show that border carbon adjustment facilitates higher carbon prices and more space for agreement on carbon prices. They analyze how recommendations vary with additional survey data, observable information on experts, and country characteristics.

In addition to this field of research, Mr. Nesje plans to work on the following projects during his research stay in Munich: Cross-Dynastic Intergenerational Altruism (solo-authored) and Early Warning Signals (an ecosystem management study with F. K. Diekert, D. Heyen and S. Shayegh).

Frikk Nesje’s research and teaching interests are primarily within resource and environmental economics. He is also interested in welfare economics and game theory. His papers have been published in the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists and Nature Climate Change, and he has presented at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and visited the London School of Economics and Northwestern University. His research has influenced public guidance in Germany, the Netherlands, New York State, Norway, the UK and the US, as well as the Office for National Statistics, the Dasgupta Review and the OECD.

Frikk Nesje is an Assistant (tenure-track) Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen. He is also a member of the Centre for Sustainability and Society. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Oslo and was previously Research fellow at Heidelberg University. For his PhD dissertation, he received H.M. The King’s Gold Medal and the Best Dissertation Award from the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.
