The Impact of Economic Sanctions

Some of Jerg Gutmann’s research, in collaboration with Matthias Neuenkirch and Florian Neumeier, deals with the consequences of international economic sanctions for human rights protection as well as with the life expectancy of targeted populations. One of their research papers has recently been accepted for publication at Public Choice under the title “Precision-Guided or Blunt? The Effect of US Economic Sanctions on Human Rights”.

Mr. Gutmann’s research interests lie in the intersection between economics, law and politics. During his stay at CESifo, he will study some of the factors that drive the formation of corruption perceptions.

Jerg Gutmann is currently Assistant Professor of Behavioral Law and Economics at the University of Hamburg’s Institute of Law and Economics (ILE) and a CESifo Research Network Affiliate. He is also co-investigator in the DFG-funded research project “Economics of Compliance with Constitutions” (ECC). He formerly conducted empirical research for the European Union and the Philippine Department of Energy as well as for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
