Improved efficiency of Italian judicial system

Together with her colleague Antonella Ferrara, Gulia Canzian has analyzed the impact of the judicial system reform that took place in Italy in 2013. In particular, they evaluated the effects that the reform had on a measure of efficiency of the judicial system in order to understand whether the reform met its main objectives, namely to reduce the backlog of cases in the courts and to make the system speedier in dealing with trials. In a second step, they examined whether the change in efficiency due to the reform brought about an improvement in firms’ access to credit, based on the hypothesis that the more efficient the system is, the easier it is for the banks to give credit and the easier it is for firms to get external finance.

Ms Canzian’s research interests are policy evaluation, industrial economics, behavioral economics and agent-based modeling. While visiting CESifo, Ms Canzian will give a seminar on the main activity carried on at the Competence Centre on Microeconomic Evaluation (CC-ME). CC-ME is committed to performing counterfactual impact evaluation on a variety of topics relevant for the European policy cycle. The mission of the centre is to enhance EU policies through data-driven micro-econometric analysis and to provide causal evidence on what works. She also plans to work with Simone Schuller on a paper on broadband adoption by microfirms in rural areas.

Giulia Canzian is a Research Fellow at the Competence Centre on Microeconomic Evaluation (CC-ME) at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (DG JRC) located in Ispra, Italy. She has a degree in Economics from the University of Trento, and she obtained a PhD in Economics and Management from the same university discussing a thesis on Agent Based Macroeconomics. Before joining the JRC, she was Junior Research Fellow at FBK-IRVAPP (Trento). She also has extensive teaching experience (undergraduate level) at the University of Trento.
