Enrico Rettore, University of Trento, CESifo Guest from 19 June to 30 June 2017.

IC Technology and Learning

Enrico Rettore and his co-authors (Daniele Checchi and Silvia Girardi) present a counterfactual evaluation of the effect of ICT resources at schools on student achievement. Conducted in Italy in 2009, 156 sixth grade classes were given additional resources for purchasing ICT equipment. By selecting an equivalent number of classes in the same schools, the researchers were able to conduct an evaluation of the causal effect of ICT on student achievements, controlling for their initial level. Despite a significant financial investment, the results were very small, and the researchers concluded that the intervention was far from cost effective.

Mr Rettore's research interests cover a variety of fields of econometrics, ranging from methodological aspects to more applied work in labour economics and programme evaluation. On these topics he has published in various journals, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Econometrics and the Review of Economics and Statistics. He has worked extensively in the evaluation of welfare and labour market programmes in Italy, and has been the principal investigator of projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Economy and Finance, among others.

During his visit to CESifo, Mr Rettore will continue work on a project (joint with Sara Tonini and Corrado Giulietti) on the intergenerational transmission of generalised trust.

Enrico Rettore is Professor of Economic Statistics at the Department of Sociology and Social Research of the University of Trento. Previously, he was Professor of Economic Statistics at the School of Business and Economics of the University of Padua. He is affiliated to FBK-IRVAPP (Trento) and also an IZA Research Fellow.
